Mission 4: Garbage Free House

As Michigan prepares to close its borders to Toronto Trash and we all look to the North to start dumping our waste, why don't we all step back for a second and consider creating a Garbage Free Household? It's not as hard as it sounds and the rewards will include a lack of Polar Bears migrating south to murder us for polluting their homeland!

Given the amount of recycling and composting tools at our disposal, it doesn't take a genius to figure out what is required to start on your way to a Garbage Free Household, but here are some helpful tips:

1. "Mini Recycling" containers

a. Place smaller recycling containers all around your house as opposed to garbage bins. A lot of garbage comes from bedrooms/offices simply because we don't want to get up and walk to the Kitchen to recycle. Have paper/plastic recycling all over the house. The bins are only $4.00 at Canadian Tire

2. Compost you bastard!

a. The biggest problem (and reason people stop) with composting is the stink in the kitchen that acquires before you get the chance to bring the bucket outside to the compost. There's an easy fix, make your compost (both indoors and outdoors) sealable. Not only will it prevent animal interest but it will also encourage you to continue this stinky, yet noble endeavour.

3. Buy/Get more Full Size Containers

a. Given the amount of paper/plastic we come across every two weeks, our boxes are usually full by the time the local paper/flyers come in. There is no limit on how much you can recycle, why not buy another set of bins? Or ask your town for more free ones? The more room you have to work with, the more likely you are to recycle.

It's not an easy task to accomplish and when it comes down to it, it's not always possible to recycle everything that comes in. My challenge to you would be to try and reduce your household garbage to 1-2 bags a week (depending on the size of the household). Take a look at the links and see if you can't work towards a garbage free household.
