When i say the name "7Seconds" what do you think of? Bull Riding? The longest you've lasted during intercourse? Or do you think of one of the most important punk rock bands of all time? Heres the skinny folks. 7seconds have been playing hardcore ever since you were a tadpole in your old mans nut sack. Next to Social Distortion, DOA, and the Circle Jerks, 7Seconds are one of the longest running hardcore bands in North America. For 20 plus years, these guys have been spreading thier postive lyrics and attitude to aware kids all over the world. Your faithful bRaD managed to score an interview with lead singer Kevin Seconds. He is curently recording and producing the bands next album (due this spring), as well as running a coffee house with his wife and playing in several solo projects. With all this on his shoulders he still made time to sit down and answer some of my burining/ idiotic questions. I present to you my interview with Kevin Seconds.
bRaD: Don't you hate interviews?
Kev: Not really. I love e-mail interviews. It's easy, quick and I'm
rarely mis-quoted like I have been with transcribed interviews.
bRaD: In Joey (Shithead) Keithly's book "I Shit Head; A Life In Punk" he
mentions a show in vancouver where 7seconds played with DOA and
Black Flag. During the show some one chucked a turd at you guys and
it hit some dude named Dim Borghino. The book says that this Dim
character was the lead singer. What the dilly? Have you not always
been the lead singer?
Kev: Originally, I just wanted to write the songs and play guitar. I
started singing more and more within the first year of our existence
though and eventually I really started loving being the band's
singer and frontman. Plus I'm a pretty shitty guitarist so....
bRaD: Did the "Skin Heads Brains And Guts" 7" get turned down for
distribution in the U.K because the label thought the album cover
would insite nazis to buy it? Or am i just an idiot?
Kev: Apparently. We were not made aware of this by Jello( singer of Dead Kennedys) or anyone
at Alternative Tentacles until much later. I didn't understand it
too much back then but once we realized how bad the whole nazi skin
thing was over in Europe in the early 80's, it kinda made sense.
Luckily someone over there actually paid attention to the words and
the fact that we're implicitly ANTI-racism and always have been.
bRaD: Man, the Replacements rocked. Got a favourite song of thiers?
Kev: I'm too huge a Replacements fan to pick just one. I honestly
love everything they ever did. I even love the badly recorded live
bootlegs of them where they're completely smashed.
One of America's most perfect bands.
bRaD: Whats the deal with old skinheads knocking 7seconds just because
you guys mellowed out a little bit in the mid 80s? New Wind is a
great album!
Kev: Not just old skinheads. Pretty much the majority of the
hardcore/punk rock scene in the bummed out and gave up on us in the
late 80's. It was hard as hell and it definitely broke our hearts at
the time but it also made us a stronger, tighter band and I'm very
proud of that time in our history. It was rough but I'm glad we did
what we wanted to do.
bRaD: Dude, the new demo "Panic Attack" sounds sweet. Is the new album
going to have be as charged up as "Good To Go"?
Kev: I'll go out on a limb and say that it is even MORE charged up
than 'GTG'. The new album is turning out to be awesome and we can't
wait to share the rest of it with our fans. And make no mistake,
this is an album for our fans and no one else. If we end up gaining
new fans because of it, that's great, but it hardly matters to us at
this point. It's a fucking great hardcore record. Actually, it's a
fucking great OURcore record. We've created our own musical
sub-genre (laughs).
bRaD: I found "Alt. Music. Hardcore" and "Good To Go" in the used section
of my favourite record store. What the shit? Those albums are
intense as shit. Who gets ride of those?
Kev: Good Charlotte fans? I don't know. I'm just glad you were able
to pick them up and hopefully for cheap!
bRaD: Oh, i did my friend. I did.
bRaD: Got a favorite insult/dirty word? Mine's "douche bag".
Kev: That's amazing and I'm not even kidding here, just 20 minutes
ago, a friend of mine asked me what my favorite dirty word was and
I said, "douche bag". I'm dead serious. But yeah, that and
motherfucker.
bRaD: Lets talk video games. "We're Gonna Fight" and "If The Kids Are
United" are both on the soundtrack of the playstation game "Courier Crisis.. Those are both amazing songs.
Ever play the game? It's not very good. Infact, it down right sucked.
Kev: Is that 'Courier Crisis" or something? I played it once but I'm
not big on video games so I don't remember if it was a good one or
not. I liked that it involved being a bike messenger because I was
one a long time ago.
bRaD: You guys have coined the term "Our Core" to describe your music.
Care to explain?
Kev: It's a form of hardcore that belongs to people who cares enough
to differentiate between good, old-fashioned-sounding American
hardcore and the emo/metal stuff of today. I understand that it
doesn't matter to most people but it does to us for a number of
reasons and we felt a need to speak up a bit. It's aggressive,
passionate, intelligent, positive, anti-violence hardcore punk rock.
You know, the kind your parents might have liked when they were kids
(laughs).
bRaD: You say you have bad teeth. I have bad teeth too. Dentist's suck.
Agreed?
Kev: I actually like my dentist. He's cool and he has fixed my teeth
a number of times in the last 8 years and has really made them look
good only to have me go on the road with 7Seconds and get them all
bashed out again. He's a genius and I sort of promised him that I
wouldn't have him do a bunch of work on my teeth until I retire from
being a hardcore singer.
bRaD: Wanna start a KISS tribute band with me? It pays 75,000 for 11
shows. I could use that kinda scratch.
Kev: No but I'll start an Alice Cooper/Billion Dollar Babies tribute
band any day and for far less money.
bRaD: Alright, only if we can play "Eighteen" over and over again.
bRaD: Ok, this ones a two parter.
Your live album "Scream Real Loud" has been called one of the most
engergetic live albums ever. How do you guys keep the intensity
after 20+ years, and do you have a favourite live album?
Kev: I can't stand the One Plus One album and I wish people would
just ignore it and get the most recent one because it represents us
better than the others. That said, I really don't know where the
energy comes from but it seems to be there in abundance when the 4
of us are onstage. I do believe that alot of it stems from our
genuine love for each other, our music together and the majority of
people who remain our diehard following.
bRaD: Ever been to www.7seconds.net? It's just photos of people wishing the
viewer a happy valentines day.
Kev: Nope but we use to own that domain name.
bRaD: Last question. Seriously, did you guys invent the whole "whoaaa"
hook in hardcore? Because I havn't heard many "whoa's" being used
in early 80's hardcore albums but 7seconds.
Kev: I don't know, really. We might have heard some other band do it
way back in the day and just copied it because it sounded cool. I
honestly don't remember or think so though.
But I'll tell you who I always thought did it better than everybody,
including us. Scream from Virginia/D.C.. Their "whoas" STILL make me
cry and smile at the same time. Pretty fucking emo, huh?
bRaD: Yes.
