Aaron Booth came to Kirkfield on October 22nd 2004 and since then, none of us have been the same. We're all slightly older than we were when he arrived. When he came I had a chance to sit down with him in a deserted tractor-trailer and talk about his life, loves and songs. Perhaps it was the alcohol in our veins or the illegal drugs in our pockets, but I had a feeling then that this was an interview to be remembered. Finally after months of fine-tuning and graphic making... Is the interview.

Ryan: You're from Calgary and have recently moved to Toronto, right? Have you ever been to Nunavut? I'm considering moving there.
Aaron: True, I'm from the wild west but I have never been further north than Terrace, B.C. Which by Ontario standards, is waaay up there. Nunavut? I think your considerations need more thought my friend. Have you looked out the window on this snowy December day?!

Ryan: No, I play to many videogames. You recently toured Japan. Is there much of a market for nice, Canadian folk music there? Do you like Animé? How did Animé effect your trip?
Aaron: I think there is a market for pretty much anything in Japan. They are extremely open minded people. I mean, you can buy underwear from a vending machine... I'd perform with hard rock bands, urban D.J.'s, Damo Suzuki inspired indie rock - and then me solo headlining the shows. It never seems weird or out of place for a solo guy on acoustic to play quietly at the end. They all listened with open ears in total silence. Pretty great.

Ryan: You're pretty great. Did anything crazy happen on the Treeball tour in Canada? Did you kill any hookers?
Aaron: We played in Montreal on Halloween at Casa Del Popolo. The whole night we were under siege by crazed artists in costumes. I loved it but Treeball was a bit freaked out because they don't have Halloween in Europe. They aren't used to getting accosted by drunken Gorillas.

Ryan:We recently had your lable-mates, the Meligrove Band come to Lindsay. What's the worst thing you can say about them?
Aaron: The are terrible at showing up on time but very good at the last minute scramble.

Ryan: They showed up on time when we brought them to Lindsay. Perhaps it's just when they're playing with you? Let's talk "In Love With Ourselves". Me and my girlfriend have two different views on what that song is about. I see it as a song about a relationship between two very self-centered people and how, even when it's over, there's not much love lost.. Because they only loved themselves anyway. She sees it as something much nicer. I can't remember exactly what it was... But I remember thinking, "Man, Miss-Optimist sees the glass as half-full... She's in for a big-let down when I ask Aaron about the song and he tells me that my point-of-view was right" So, Who's right?
Aaron: Well, I wrote it as a glass half-full song. But you have to interpret the song in a way that speaks to your own point of view. To me, it's about people emerging from a difficult relationship that was bigger than the individuals themselves and now they have to move on and learn to love who they are again, rather than live their life through their partner.

Ryan: I really like the song "When She Appeared" from your album, "Transparent". What's your favorite colour?
Aaron: Thanks! I like brown.

Ryan: Brown? Wierd. What kind of job(s) does a man with glasses like yours have?
Aaron: My working life has always been transient and temporary. Highlights: changing oil at Mr. Lube; shoveling snow; pumping gas for boats at a B.C. resort; using my Volvo station wagon to deliver gourmet dinners in Calgary; highrise window washer; virtual tour photographer for Toronto apartment rental website.

Ryan: You used to have Jeremy Gara and Tim Kingsbury from "The Arcade Fire" in your band. Please comment on the death of the Arcade as a palace of entertainment. What was/is your favorite Arcade Game?
Aaron: In junior high I was a resident of the Beddington Mall arcade in Northwest Calgary. It was a haven for all my friends to eat french fries and become masters of our own little video universe. My favourite video game was Excitebike, which was all about off-road motorcyclling (nothing like today's hi tech games). I was so obsessed with the game that I figured out how to play for an hour on 25 cents. In these post-arcade times, now most kids have to shell out a few hundred bucks for a computer to play games, and they sit at home playing alone... We were never alone at the arcade. It was a social world. Plus, we had to ride our bikes to get there and back so it helped work off the french fries. Ah, the good old days! For Pinball, Black Knight was pretty hot.

Ryan: If you could recommend one band from Canada to all the good people reading this, who would it be?
Aaron: I used to be in a experimental pop band called Shecky Forme. We were popular in Calgary but never toured so nobody knows we existed. I wish people did cos I think we made some good music. (http://aaronboothmusic.com/music.html) But really, the band I would suggest is vailhalen, the new project from my friends in SF. They just recorded an amazing record in a high school band room and used stairwells for natural reverb! They are http://www.vailhalen.com

Ryan: Tell us about your "First Time" (doing anything.)
Aaron: The first time I ate pizza changed my life forever. It was at The Organ Grinder in downtown Toronto, circa 1980. I'm now a recovering addict.
