Topon Das is a sort of legends to most metal/grind heads in Ontario and Quebec. His band, "Fuck The Facts" has been up and down this country destroying minds with their beyond heavy grind core. Towards the end of December Topon and I happened to find ourselves on the same plane flying to "Grindtopia" the Grind-Core festival in eastern Italy. We sat down and spoke about his life, love and three bands. Fuck The Facts, Deamon and Time Kills Everything. Here's what came of it.
Ryan: Topon, your band's name (Fuck The Facts) is very difficult to put on a poster and hang up around town. What are some techniques people have used to mask the "Fuck" but still get the point across?
Topon: Sometimes people will just censor it by writing “F#%* The Facts” or something like that. We also have an FTF logo people have used in the past. This is usually just a problem in small town Ontario, I can’t really remember anywhere else that we’ve been censored.
Ryan: What is the Ottawa music scene like? To many shows in a night so no one comes out for anything but their friends? Or do people actually give a shit?
Topon: There are definitely a lot of shows here, so you can’t go to them all. But, I think Ottawa has a pretty decent scene. People always complain, but they do that in every town. If you want more info on the Ottawa scene you should visit Punk Ottawa
Ryan: Let's talk about your other band, Deamon. There was a villian from Reboot named Deamon, wasn't there? Did you ever watch that show?
Topon: I vaguely remember Reboot. I don’t think I ever really watched it though. YTV gives you cancer.
Ryan:That chick with the chimpmunk voice is hot in a really sick way. Can you write out the lyrics to "Tete Hors De L'eau" if you have them handy? I'd really like to know what is said.
Topon:
You can find a lot of our lyrics on our site in the media section. But, here ya go:
A TÊTE HORS DE L’EAU
m. mongeon
La belle histoire d'Anne
Cacophonie moderne
Peut-être même la tienne
Réceptions.dans son salon
Invitations
Les amis, le mari
De longues nuits passées
Oubliée, cajolée
Des réunions.à l'occasions
Comprends chéri
Ben ca va s'erplacer
De longues nuits passees
Le bureau
Le boulot
Toujours plus absent
Le lit est grand
Seule
Sans raisons
Chéri
L’ennui
Non
Jéhovah, que suis-je sans toi, jéhovah
La mort
Suicide
Départ
Vous qui regardez ma demeure
Une secte me l'a offerte
J'me suis pas réveillée
Parce que la tour.ne m'a pas gardée
Ryan: Using only imagery/characters trademarked by Nintendo, can you tell us a hilarious story that metophorically relates to Fuck The Facts?
Topon:Yes I can’t. All I can say is that Mario did to Bowzer what Ryu Hayabusa thought he could never do. Zelda was crushed and told The Jaquio that he could never trust Robo Warrior again. Not only did he try this same thing with that guy that played on my soccer team. But the last time he saw Donkey Kong that dude from Dragon Warrior was there and believe me, no one expected that he would Mega Man Dr. Wily in the Tetris with a T& C Surf Design.
Ryan: I don't think Ryu Hayabusa is trademarked by Nintendo. I remember reading that one of your former members joined the band, "Exhumed" recently. Do you like carrots? Do you really think that they help eyes?
Topon: I ate a lot of carrots as a kid and my mom used to call me “eagle eyes”, so there might be something to it. I still don’t need glasses, but I don’t really like eating carrots anymore.
Ryan: Have you ever considered breaking off with Mel to create your own, two person White-Stripes style of band that covers strickly Bon Jovi?
Topon: Well, sorta. But minus the “Bon Jovi” part. There were times that we thought about starting a new project, but we’re very happy doing FTF. I do have a new project called Time Kills Everything that might start playing live at some point and I’ve talked to Mel about maybe filling in sometime, since 2/3 of the band lives in Winnipeg. Shameless TKE plug here: Time Kills Everything Website
Ryan: Tell us about the box of Cds you carry to every show.
Topon:
I got a distro called Ghetto Blaster. Over 600 titles covering everything from punk to death metal, grindcore to noise and experimental, ambient, industrial, hardcore, etc… You can also order on-line through our site:
Ghetto Blaster.net
Ryan:You guys just did a 7" with Subcut. You guys release a lot of split albums. Who's the best band you've ever split with?
Topon: We recorded the split 7” with Subcut in the spring of 2004, and it’s the last recording we did with our old drummer Matt (the guy that went on to join Exhumed). I don’t think we got a crazy amount of splits compared to a lot of other grindcore bands. We got 3 split 7”’s and 2 split CDs. It’s hard to pick which has been my favorite band to do a split with, cause they’re all so different. But Subcut is pretty wicked and Sylvester Staline is another one of my favorites. We got a split 7” with Mesrine and one with Head Hits Concrete lined-up, those will be cool cause it’s the first time we’ll be doing splits with bands that we’re friends with and that we’ve toured with.
Ryan: Mesrine is pretty kick ass. Can you tell us about your "first time"? Doing anything.
Topon: As a rule I try to not do much of anything and usually the first time ends up being a horrible experience I’d like to forget about. End of story.
Ryan:How exactly do you pronounce Deamon?
Topon:DEE-A-MON. There should be a line over the A, but I couldn’t find it. So the A is pronounced like “Eh” as in “Take off, eh!”. I have no idea what it means though, I think it’s a word that Cory made up.
Ryan:Who do you like more, the guys from Deamon or the guys + girl from FTF? If it was a battle-royal to the death, who would win? And which side would you fight with?
Topon:I love them all. I’ve been jamming with Ron and Shawn from Deamon for about 6-7 years now in various bands and I used to live with Ron. But, I do spend more time with the FTF dudes now and I live with Mel. In a fight I’d have to stick with FTF cause we’re all very small in size, so the only way we can even it up is to out number Deamon. I’m not sure who would win, FTF is younger but Deamon is meaner. It’s not something I like to think about. I rather we all drink beer in a hot tub together and talk about our feelings.
Ryan:I'll join you in that hot-tub. I have alot of feelings that need expressing.
